Vitamins for Bones

Nutrition is essential to bone health and since it is a modifiable factor in the development and maintenance of bone mass the importance of a daily multi-vitamin should never be under-estimated. Most people mistakenly believe that the only vitamin essential for supporting bone health is a daily calcium supplement. But while 80 to 90 percent of bone mineral content is comprised of calcium and phosphorous, there are other dietary components that are required to maintain the health of our bones, including Vitamins A, C, D and K, magnesium, zinc, copper, fluoride, iron and protein. These micronutrients are needed for maintaining healthy bone metabolism which is a highly complex process that requires a number of micro-nutrients which are co-dependent. A deficiency or excess in any one of the bone vitamins could result in loss of bone density in later stages of life. A daily multi-vitamin supplement may help to provide essential vitamins for bones.

In its April 2009 issue, the European Journal of Nutrition reported a study that emphasized the importance of taking vitamins for bones. A total of 92 senior volunteers participated in this 6-month study – 49 were given a daily multivitamin and 43 were given a placebo. At the end of 6 months, 77 percent of the multivitamin users were found to have adequate levels of Vitamin D; as compared to just 10 percent in the placebo group who had just satisfactory levels. It was noticed that bone density in the multivitamin users had increased in spite of the short six-month duration of the research.1

Should You Take a Multi Vitamin for Bones?

Prolonged life spans and an increasing elderly population are likely to lead to a higher number of bone fractures due to weak or brittle bones. A multi-vitamin supplement that contains Vitamins A, B, C, D and K along with essential minerals such as calcium, potassium magnesium, phosphorous and folic acid could not only meet the gaps in nutrition but also help promote bone health.

Some theories hold that multivitamins may play more than the traditional role of preventing deficiency diseases like scurvy or rickets. A report from Harvard School of Public Health suggests that a deficiency in micro-nutrients may lead to DNA damage. Damage to the DNA is believed to cause or accelerate age-related conditions.2 If this is true, it may mean that many of the degenerative diseases that ail our society today, could have their roots in micronutrient deficiencies. Though controversies exist, taking a daily multivitamin supplement with all its potential health benefits far outweighs the risks of not taking one.3
