Vitamin B and Dementia

Vitamin B Dementia

Unraveling the mystery behind the aging brain has been one of the most heavily studied topics in the scientific community. One of the more recent studies conducted by a team of scientists at the University of Oxford in the UK, may have found a link between vitamin B and the prevention of, or slowing down the progression of age-related memory loss. The Oxford Project investigated memory and aging in a group of 168 participants, aged over 70, who suffered from mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The study, co-funded by the Alzheimer's Research Trust, found that administration of B vitamins may help delay the onset of mental decline in the elderly.

A Link Between Vitamin B and Brain Atrophy

Mild cognitive impairment is typically indicative of brain atrophy, a normal process of aging. According to a study published in The Lancet, more than 50 percent of MCI patients over age 65 progress toward dementia within 5 years.2 The Oxford Project studied the vitamin B dementia theory by administering high doses of Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12 and folic acid to 85 participants, and a placebo to 83. At the end of two years, scientists measured brain atrophy in both control groups. The average brain reduction was 1.08 percent per year in the group that took the placebo and 0.76 percent per year in the group that was given B vitamins. The results showed that Vitamin B intake slowed brain atrophy by an overwhelming 30 percent.

Vitamin B administration to patients with dementia helped to lower levels of an amino acid in the blood called homocysteine. Scientists noted that those who had the highest levels of homocysteine in the blood at the beginning of the trial showed the most benefits from taking large doses of Vitamin B, showing up to a 50 percent reduction in brain shrinkage when compared to their counterparts who were given a placebo.

The Oxford Project is a break-through in medical research and a stimulus for further study on modifiable nutritional factors that may help decelerate the atrophy of the brain, thus delaying cognitive decline. Dr. David Smith, a co-leader of the study, said: “It is our hope that this simple and safe treatment will delay development of Alzheimers in many people who suffer from mild memory problems.”
These findings are corroborated by thirty years of Vitamin B-brain studies, highlighting the importance of Vitamin B nutrition, particularly in people over age 65, for optimal brain functions. Vitamin B deficiency in the elderly has been linked to deterioration of brain function and dementia.

Nutrition for Women

Nutrition for Women

For the longest of time, menopause has been perceived as an uncomfortable phase in a woman’s life. But today, armed with more knowledge on the physiological and emotional changes that take place during menopause, more women can confidently meet the challenges posed during this crucial stage of life. Scientific research on herbs and nutrients is guiding formulators to come up with innovative nutritional formulas that work with the body’s natural system to help combat common symptoms associated with menopause.

Generally, menopause occurs between the age of 40 and 55 when there is a decline in the production of the hormones, estrogen and progesterone. These changes in hormone levels not only result in causing common symptoms such as hot flashes, irritability, mood swings, sleeping troubles, loss of libido, memory lapses, and depression, but they may additionally predispose women to certain health risks such as heart disease and loss of bone density. During this stage, strategic nutrition for women over 40 could play a vital role in alleviating these effects and minimizing health risks. Listed below are some ingredients that may be used to help support the special nutritional needs of women over 40:

Nutrition for heart health - Estrogen offers a protective influence over the arterial walls of the heart by raising the levels of HDL (good cholesterol) and lowering the levels of LDL (bad cholesterol). The decline in estrogen production during menopause may leave women vulnerable to heart disease. To compensate for the loss of protection, a regular intake of omega-3 supplements can help support heart health and may also help improve depressive tendencies.1

Nutrition for bone health – Lower levels of estrogen leave women more susceptible to the loss of calcium in bones, leading to loss of bone density. Calcium and Vitamin D supplements are essential nutrition for women in menopause.2

Phytoestrogenic herbs contain plant-like hormones called phytoestrogens which may help to modulate hormonal fluctuations during menopause. Such herbs include black cohosh, dong quai, red clover and flaxseed. 3-10

Non-estrogenic herbs, such as Lepidium Meyenii (Maca), the root of an Andean plant belonging to the radish family, support the endocrine system and are popularly used as a substitute to Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). Maca is believed to stimulate hormone production and naturally restore hormonal imbalance. 11

Other Nutrients – A broad-spectrum multi-vitamin with antioxidants supports optimal health. For menopausal women In particular, Vitamins E and C may help to alleviate hot flashes and mood swings. Vitamins, D, B-6, B-12 and folic acid may help support heart health and help rebalance metabolism. Magnesium may provide relief for anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia and irritability. 12-15

Fish Oil and Weight Loss

Fish Oil Weight Loss

Can fish oil help you lose weight? Hopes were raised after several animal and human studies suggested a mild weight-loss benefit derived from supplementing the diet with fish oil supplements. But, according to a recent study conducted at the Cooper Institute in Dallas, Texas, any hope of weight loss through omega-3 fatty acids appears to be just another fishy tale!1-4

Fish Oil Weight Loss

The clinical trial published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition began with 128 participants with a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 26 and 40. Participants in the study were randomly assigned to two groups—one which received a placebo and the other which received omega-3 supplementation daily. Both groups received dietary and exercise counseling. After 24 weeks, only 81 participants (total of both groups) completed the trial and showed a loss of BMI by 5 percent. The group that was given omega-3 supplements did not fare any better in weight loss than the group that was given the placebo.
The study concluded that supplementing the diet with omega-3 supplementation did not result in fish oil weight loss, but the overall cardiovascular benefits of omega-3 fatty acids in overweight individuals were still found to be significant. While the omega-3 fish oil weight loss therapy may not be effective for losing fat, researchers advocate a daily dose of omega 3 fatty acids to promote cardiovascular health in people who are overweight. 5

Decades of research affirm that a higher dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids has a protective influence on cardiovascular health. The mounting evidence from these studies suggests that fish oil may not deliver omega-3 weight loss, but may significantly help overweight people enter the low risk cardiovascular category. These heart-protective effects have been well-documented:

• Studies show that omega-3 benefits on cardiovascular health may be attributed to their anti-inflammatory and anti-clotting properties. 6

• A moderate intake of omega-3 fatty acids has been associated with higher levels of DHA in the blood. This slows down the progression of the thickening of the artery walls caused by an accumulation of LDL (bad cholesterol). 7

• Omega-3 fatty acids are believed to help reduce triglyceride and LDL levels in the blood, thus possibly lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease. 8

• Another heart-protective effect of omega-3 supplements may be that of lowering the incidence of irregular heartbeats. 9

• Several studies suggest that patients with diabetes and metabolic syndrome may benefit from omega-3 supplementation. The metabolic syndrome affects approximately 44 percent of people, aged 50 and above. It is a diagnosis given to people who have one or more specific risk factors, many of which are weight-related. 10-12

New Year's Resolutions

An active area of enforcement for both the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the area of unsubstantiated efficacy claims for health products and dietary supplements. If 2011 is anything like the past two years, of FTC activity against false and misleading advertising campaigns, supplement companies should resolve to understand the issues and arm themselves with a list of resolutions to abide by.

New Year’s Resolutions

If you haven’t already drawn up a list of new year’s resolutions for your supplement business, now is a good time to start. Before doing so, here’s a briefing of the activities of the FTC during the past two years. In 2009, there were 11 actions taken by the FTC against supplement manufacturers whose advertising campaigns included claims that their supplements would cure or treat certain types of cancers. Action was also taken against manufacturers who made false and misleading claims about their nutritional supplements being able to treat various diseases. Likewise, 2010 also stirred a slew of enforcement activity with settlement orders against Nestle and IovateHealthSciences being the most prominent..1-2 If well-established companies can err on the wrong side of the FTC without deliberately intending to do sofind themselves unintentionally acting outside the guidelines set forth by the FTC and FDA, then all of us are susceptible.

To help you stay within the confines of the FTC guidelines, we’ve collected a few important new year’s resolutions you should adhere to. Consider adding these to your list of top new year’s resolutions to safeguard your supplement company!

Here Are Your Top 5 New Year’s Resolutions

1.I will not hide behind the safety of numbers. Other manufacturers or marketers may be crossing the line where health claims are concerned, but that’s never a justification for you to do it. Besides, it will never work when you stand against the ire of the FTC or the FDA!

2. I will be aware of the “claimed” effect. If a product highlights a particular ingredient, a regulator may consider you are making a “claim” on the basis of you highlighting this particular ingredient in your product. The highlighted ingredient, therefore, should be in the product at a significant level that is in accordance with dosages used in successful human trials and should be in the right amount needed to be effective.

3. I will keep abreast of FTC / FDA enforcement action and public comments. This will provide you with helpful information when applying the “grayer” areas of the lawestablishing your health claims, particularly when it comes to deciding whether you should launch a new product or tweak an existing formula.

4. I will make sure my product’s health claim matches relevant studies. Even if you do have FDA approval for your claim, make sure the product, dosage, target population, etc. matches those used in the research study.

5. I will keep my customers happy by producing products that have high potential for efficacy. As long as you are upfront and honest, Ssatisfied customers will reap remain loyalty and patronage to your brand. Remaining as transparent as possible is always the best way to keep your customers coming back.

This is where partnering with a private label supplement manufacturer, like Vitacap Labs, can make a huge difference to on your product line. Being able to stand confidently behind your product without compromising on your nutritional new year’s resolutions is vital to your reputation. Vitacap Labs offers science-supported formulas that are manufactured within a GMP-certified facility. Whether you’re a startup, or a well-established supplement company, you’ll find Vitacap Labs’ manufacturing solutions deliver superior-quality products that you and your customers can safely trust. Request a free quote today!

Dietary Guidelines for Americans

Dietary Guidelines for Americans

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) are recommendations of dietary intake for maintaining general health and a reasonable weight. The Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) are established by the Institute of Medicine’s Food and Nutrition Board and include nutrient intake goals for protein, fats, carbohydrates (sugars and starches), vitamins and minerals. RDAs are age and gender specific and have been established to meet the needs of approximately 98 percent of the people in a given group.

According to a survey headed by Dr. Susan M. Krebs-Smith of the American Cancer Institute, most Americans have neglected to meet the RDAs of almost every nutrient category. Reporting on the nutritional status of Americans, the survey states, “nearly the entire U.S. population consumes a diet that is not on par with recommendations.” About 88 percent of the population failed to meet the daily RDA for total vegetable. This includes RDA for both dark green and orange vegetables. About 96 percent did not meet the RDA for legumes and whole grains. The report also noted that most Americans consume more calories from solid fats than is recommended. Take for example, children 8 and under. The survey showed that more than 99 percent of children under the age of 8 ate more margarine and other solid fats than the RDA recommends. There clearly is a noticeable difference in what Americans should be eating and what they actually are eating. Combined with the alarming rate of obesity and diet-related chronic diseases, these startling figures indicate a nation in dietary crisis and in need of drastic dietary changes.1

The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans focus on these critical public health concerns. The DGA are updated every five years by a 13-member Committee that relies heavily on the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) Report released by the Departments for Agricultural (USDA). For the first time in its history, the DGAC report addresses the health needs of children, as well as eating behaviors including breakfast consumption, fast foods and snacks, particularly in relation to weight management. The report recommends a shift in the American food intake to a more plant-based diet that focuses more on vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and cooked dry beans and peas.2

Private Label Vitamins or Supplements to Help Consumers Meet the RDA of Fruits and Vegetables

To help your customers meet the RDAs of fruits and vegetable, supplement companies may want to consider enhancing their product line with an array of private label vitamin supplements. Vitacap Labs provides you a wide choice of private label vitamin formulas that include products made from natural food sources. With their GMP-certified facility and superior formulations that are based on scientific support, Vitacap Labs can easily provide you with manufacturing solutions that meet the nutritional needs of your customers.

What Exactly is Private Labeling, Anyway?

What Exactly is Private Labeling, Anyway?

People ask us all the time what we do as a company, and with the scripted answer that has been perfected over time, we explain that “We are a leading private label vitamin and supplement manufacturer located in Farmingdale, NY”. And they nod with agreement the entire time we answer, only to respond with “Oh, ok – so you’re like a Vitamin Shoppe, right?”

Not exactly.

Whether you realize it or not, you are inundated with private labeling everyday of your life. It may be at CVS, the supermarket, or even the ‘Walmarts’ of the world, but you are exposed to private labeling at its best, and you probably don’t even realize it!

Here’s a Good Example:

Have you ever been to Walgreens and gone into the aisle that sells cold and cough products? Along with the myriad of choices, I’m sure you’ll see the well known ‘Airborne’ product somewhere on display, right? Well, have you ever noticed the box right next to it that sort of looks the same, is the same size, says it does the same thing, is MUCH more affordable, and is called ‘Wal-born’?

Welcome to Private Labeling!

In a Nut Shell…

Private labeling is when one company creates a product to compete with a similar brand name product, puts their name on it and calls it something slightly different. Here are some examples you may have seen already:

Brand Name Product

Private Label Comparable Product

Tylenol PM

Acetaminphen/Diphenhydramine HCI

Claritin

Loratidine

Advil

Ibuprofen

But this is not solely limited to the major drug chains and super discount stores of the world. It can very well be you or your neighbor!

Do you or someone you know religiously go to the gym, eat healthy every day, and constantly give advice to those around you on how to live healthier lives? That describes the perfect person to private label his/her own supplement: possibly a protein powder, or maybe a pre-workout powder, or even a weight loss supplement. Here are the 3 easy steps to getting a product line up and running:

1. Find a manufacturer who makes the product of interest

2. Provide the name/logo for the product labels

3. Place the order

Yes, it is that easy!

Now of course, to be successful you’ll need marketing, an online presence with a merchant account so you can accept money for your product, and of course, customer support for anyone with questions - so certainly more thought is involved in building your business. But from the manufacturing side, it really is as easy as 1-2-3.

Some Thoughts for the Entrepreneur at Heart

Do your research.

Make sure the manufacturer you are going to work with is GMP-certified. This ensures that the facility where your product is being manufactured follows guidelines that are regulated by the FDA.

Tip: Being ‘GMP-compliant’ is NOT the same as being GMP-certified!

Look into the product you are interested in. Is it just a fad that will be gone as quickly as it came, or is this the newest health kick that is bound to stand the test of time? By the time you have your business up and running, your product is manufactured and ready to go to market and your business name is recognizable in the market place, you want to make sure that your target audience still wants your product!

Price isn’t everything.

Tip: Mom was right – you generally get what you pay for!

Some manufacturers boast the lowest price, raw materials that are less than any other quote you’ll receive, the fastest turnaround time, etc. But be leery. You usually get what you pay for. If someone is able to give a product to you at 50% what everyone else is quoting, SOMETHING is being sacrificed. Maybe they aren’t GMP-certified; maybe they are sourcing their raw materials over-seas; maybe they are producing the product with your logo on it in their garage. Ask questions, and make sure you get answers. Information is power!

Remember, it is YOUR name that is on the product.

Tip: Say what you mean and mean what you say!

In all that you do throughout your business’ discovery stage, just remember that it will be your name on the bottom line. You are offering a product to hopefully enhance someone’s health and well-being. Whether it is immune support, weight reduction, or an antioxidant, whatever it is that you say your product will do, just make sure you have well-documented reason to support it!

Hopefully this helps clear up any confusion that our readers out there may have had on what exactly Private Labeling really is!

Winter Vitamins

And as the temperature outside drops, our bodies’ need for more vitamins and nutrients, rises!

Ahhh yes, the holidays are here and everyone is getting into the spirit of giving. But gifts aren’t the only things you may receive from others. As we all gather indoors to stay out of the cold, the environment is most optimal for bacteria and viruses to spread, and I don’t know about you, but that is one gift I DON’T need from others!

Make sure you continue taking your daily multi-vitamin and usual supplements, but for an added boost of immune support, double up on that Vitamin D and Vitamin C. We’re not getting nearly as much sun as in the summer months, so our need for more of the ‘Sunshine Vitamin’ (D) is apparent, and despite the recent controversy on Vitamin C, I’m still a firm believer that it has helped me avoid many a flu through the years!

Everyone here at Vitacap Labs wishes you and your family a happy and healthy holiday season! Stay warm, and when the going gets tough, just keep on supplementing……
